Ten Commandments of Being A CNA

Are you thinking about becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) but you're not sure what to

expect on the first day on the job? Nothing can really prepare you for being a caregiver. No two days are alike, and no two patients are alike either. As a CNA your role is to help patients with their personal hygiene and daily needs, provide comfort, transportation, and monitor vital signs. This job is ideal for someone who enjoys helping others.

We've put together a list of CNA do's and don'ts and help make your first day run a lot smoother.

1. Wash your hands, often. 
2. Give residents privacy. Knock on the door before entering their room. Leave the room when they have a phone call. Don't talk or gossip about them to other patients or staff. 
3. Answer call lights. You never when there's a real emergency. 
4. Don't force feed patients. Be gentle with them and respect their wishes. 
5. Don't double diaper patients. No brainer.
6. Don't give patients medication of any kind. You can risk losing your job. 
7. Turn off your phone and electronic devices. Be professional at all times. 
8. Treat your patients with respect. Be kind to them.
9. Don't abandon your floor if you're the only person working
